Almost excellent

Well worth picking up if you already have the basics.

I have been working with graphics for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.

Better than I expected

A superb guide. The examples are small but complete.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. If you have the prerequisites, this is an easy recommendation. I will be keeping it on my desk rather than the shelf.

Useful in parts

Three stars feels about right. Useful, but not essential.

I have been working with graphics for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Borrow it first if you can, or at least check the table of contents carefully before buying.
