A useful guide
Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.
I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.
Good value. Not perfect, but I would buy another book from this author.
I have been working with regular expressions for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
The clearest explanation of graphics I have come across.
I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
It does the job, though it took some patience to get through.
I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Useful as a reference, less so as a straight read from cover to cover.
Not quite what I expected from the description, but there is material here.

The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. Fine, but there are stronger books on the same subject if you look around.
