Fine as a reference

Decent, but uneven. Some chapters are much stronger than others.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. Useful as a reference, less so as a straight read from cover to cover.

Recommended, with a caveat

Good book. The writing is direct and the author is honest about limits.

I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Good value for the price and worth the time it takes to work through properly.

Useful in parts

Some sections were excellent and others felt like filler.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. Three stars feels about right. It will stay on my shelf, but it will not be the first one I reach for.
