The best book on this subject I have read

I have read a lot of books on this subject and this is the clearest.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. If you have the prerequisites, this is an easy recommendation. I will be keeping it on my desk rather than the shelf.

Useful in parts

It does the job, though it took some patience to get through.

I have been working with programming for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Fine, but there are stronger books on the same subject if you look around.

Very good, with a few caveats

Very good, with a few caveats. The core material is strong.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. The chapters on game programming are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.

Well worth picking up

A useful guide. The examples assume a particular environment, but that is fixable.

A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.

Exactly what I was looking for

Genuinely excellent — I finished it in a week and immediately started again.

A genuine pleasure to read

Genuinely excellent — I finished it in a week and immediately started again.

This is the third book I have read on graphics this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.
